Sukkah on My Porch or Balcony

Sukkah on My Porch or Balcony

Can I Build a Sukkah on My Porch or Balcony?

Living in an apartment or a city home often means limited outdoor space — but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on building a kosher sukkah! Whether you have a porch, balcony, or even a driveway, many families successfully build their sukkah in tight urban settings.

But is it halachically valid? And what practical things should you consider?

Let’s explore what the halacha says, and how you can build your sukkah anywhere — even several floors up.

Halachic Requirements – Porch or Balcony Sukkah

According to halacha, a sukkah must be:

Under the open sky (no roof, trees, or overhangs above)

Built on a stable surface that can hold the walls and schach

With at least 2 full walls and a partial third

More shade than sunlight inside

The Most Common Question:

Can I build under a porch ceiling or awning?

No. If the sukkah is placed under a permanent structure (like a roof or second-story balcony), it is not kosher, even if the schach is placed properly.

However — if your balcony is fully open to the sky, with no obstructions above it, it is absolutely kosher (assuming other conditions are met).

What If My Schach Is Below a Window?

Good news: building a sukkah on a balcony or patio beneath your window is not a problem — as long as there’s nothing above it. This is quite common in apartment buildings in cities like New York or Lakewood.

Some families even place their schach through a sliding window, creating a sukkah space that is accessible from inside — as long as the structure is under open sky.

Practical Setup Tips

1. Use a Modular Sukkah Kit

Our pre-sized sukkah kits are perfect for:

Porches (narrow rectangular spaces)

Balconies (lightweight frame + fabric)

Tight side yards or driveways

2. Anchor Walls Securely

Urban sukkahs often face wind tunnels between buildings. Use:

Sandbags

Zip ties

Metal clamps

3. Choose Rollable Schach

Rollable bamboo schach is:

Easy to place from above

Lightweight for balconies

Available in compact widths (4', 6', 8' etc.)

Special Note: "Sukkah Above 20 Amot"

If you're building a sukkah on a very high balcony, there’s a halachic concept of “sukkah above 20 amot” (approx. 30 ft / 9.6 meters) which may invalidate the sukkah — but only if the interior ceiling is that high.

For regular apartments — this is usually not a concern.
